Comments

One of the last London factories to close (about 1985). Satisfactory mid range uprights. Most Barratt and Robinson pianos in the UK are light mahogany modern ones about 110cm high. Some have actions that make clicking noises due to plastic key bushings that were used for a while. In about 1983 I visited the Barratt and Robinson factory to purchase a six octave piano. At the time they were making about 7000 pianos a year, about 95% uprights with their own name and Kastner and a few Challen grands. They also made the Zender upright, which was the smallest 7 octave piano made in the UK. The “Minstrelle” spinet style piano made from about 1930 to 1950 is best avoided, being very basic. There are a few traditional style Barratt and Robinson pianos dating from 1890 which are mostly basic uprights.
